Folks interested in fulfilling Court Mandated Community Service hours are welcome to do so at the HSCO shelter and HSCO thrift store. For this program, you do not need to submit a volunteer application, but do read all the information below on our requirements and what to expect.

Court Ordered Community Service Requirements
HSCO will not accept those convicted of animal abuse/neglect, weapons charges, sex crimes, violent crimes, or theft.

• Bring court documentation stating how many hours will be completed and the completion date.

• Bring court documentation of your offense

• Bring a current form of ID

• Must be 18 years or older

Court Ordered Community Service at HSCO Shelter
• Must arrive at the shelter between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Monday –Friday or Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

• No court-ordered community service on Sundays

• Wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, as your task will be cleaning

• Those completing Court Ordered Community Service hours will not contact the public. Contact with shelter animals will be minimal and only pertain to the cleaning duties assigned.

• Must be able to walk on a concrete floor and be on your feet for most of the day. Most of the shelter tasks involve a lot of moving, lifting, and physical activity.

• We cannot guarantee hours as it depends on our current needs. Sometimes, we do not have enough work for you to complete to fulfill all of your hours. We try to accommodate as much as possible, but you may be turned away or asked to leave early if there are no tasks to perform.

Duties at the Shelter you may perform include:

• Washing/ Disinfecting kennels

• Laundry

• Washing/ disinfecting animal crates

• Cleaning windows

• Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and other duties as needed

Court Ordered Community Service at HSCO Thrift Store
• Hours available to complete court-ordered service are between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Earlier hours may be possible but must be discussed with thrift store management in advance.

• Wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, as your task will be primarily cleaning

• Must be able to walk on a concrete floor and be on your feet for most of the day. There is a lot of moving, lifting, and physical activity involved. If you cannot walk up a flight of stairs, please let management know as soon as possible, as this limits the tasks you will be able to complete.  

• We cannot guarantee hours as it depends on our current needs. Sometimes, we do not have enough work for you to complete to fulfill all of your hours. We try to accommodate as much as possible, but you may be turned away or asked to leave early if there are no tasks to perform.

Duties at the Thrift Store you may perform include:


• Sweeping, vacuuming, washing windows
• Receiving donations
• Cleaning, sorting, and pricing received donations
• Transporting recyclable items from the upstairs to the downstairs recycling area
